Proposal for new Secondary School in Croydon - South Norwood Arena & CALAT sites from September 2014

Consultation period: 06 February to 06 March 2013

 The Proposal

Croydon Council is proposing to create a new 6 forms of entry secondary  school using the

Croydon Adult Learning and Training (CALAT) site in Sandown Road and adding new buildings around the existing sports arena. It is expected that the new school will open in September 2014.

Public consultation

The council is keen to hear the views of members of the local community and other stakeholders. We want to ensure the school meets with the needs of the community and becomes part of it. Your views will help us in planning the design of the school and in considering the way it operates.

Why do we want to build a new secondary school

Like most London Boroughs, Croydon is facing an unprecedented growth in demand for primary

places which is leading to a larger number of pupils working their way through primary schools and transferring to secondary schools. This means that the demand for secondary school places is increasing considerably.

An Academy

The council will be seeking proposals from academy providers. The new secondary school will be an academy in line with statutory requirements. It will specialise in science and sports as part

of Croydon's contribution to the Olympic legacy. Academies are independently managed, all ability schools. They are set up by sponsors from business, faith or voluntary groups in partnership with the Department for Education (DfE) and the local authority .
